Michael W. Riker: A Lifetime of Service, A Commitment to Prince George’s County

Hello, my name is Michael W. Riker, and I am honored to announce my candidacy for the Prince George’s County Council at-large seat, which was vacated on June 14, 2024. As a proud resident of Prince George’s County since 1968, growing up in District Heights, Maryland, I have deep roots in this community. My journey in public service began at the young age of 16 and has continued ever since, driven by a passion to serve and protect the people of this county.

My family’s connection to Prince George’s County began when my father, a member of the United States Air Force, was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base. Inspired by his dedication to service, I joined the District Heights Volunteer Fire Department as a teenager, where I became an Emergency Medical Technician and eventually served as the rescue squad Captain. My commitment to public safety led me to complete basic firefighter training at the University of Maryland Fire Rescue Institute in College Park.

In 1984, I joined the Prince George’s County Police Department as a Public Service Aide, and soon after, I was hired by the United States Capitol Police, where I was assigned to the newly created First Responder Unit and served on the Ceremonial Unit. However, my dedication to Prince George’s County brought me back to the local police force, where I served in various capacities, including as a Narcotics Detective, a Task Force Officer with the Drug Enforcement Administration, and a Joint Terrorism Task Force Officer with the FBI.

During my 22 years with the Prince George’s County Police, I received 14 letters of commendation and six awards for my service. My work with the International Counter-Terrorism Officers Association, where I served as president until its executive board disbanded the organization, further reflects my commitment to public safety and international cooperation.

Even after my retirement, my dedication to Prince George’s County has never wavered. I have listened to the concerns of our residents about issues such as parental rights, strong support for public safety, infrastructure improvements, balanced budgets, and ensuring that our government prioritizes people over politics. As I travel throughout the county, I see the challenges we face, and I am ready to bring my experience and dedication to the county council.

As a lifelong public servant, I am committed to listening to the voices of our community and working tirelessly to address the issues that matter most to you. Together, we can ensure a brighter future for Prince George’s County.

Thank you for your support.

Michael W. Riker
